A freelance life, a life in the arts, is sometimes like putting messages in bottles, on a desert island, and hoping that someone will find one of your bottles and open it and read it, and put something in a bottle that will wash its way back to you: appreciation, or a commission, or money, or love. And you have to accept that you may put out a hundred things for every bottle that winds up coming back.

I think those of us in Singapore could do with a little humour today.

“Pretended to be a journalist to get things for free
A few years ago I made a fake press pass using a template I downloaded off the internet. It’s attached to a lanyard and has my photograph on it and it looks official.I would often stroll up to archaeological sites and other places of interest to tourists with this thing around my neck and attempt to walk straight in. I would usually be halted and told to buy a ticket. At this point I would pretend to be annoyed and tell them I was journalist, there to write about the site for some fictional travel magazine, claiming that ‘they’ (whoever ‘they’ were) said it was okay. This worked about 3% of the time”.
