Engaging and Managing Students in the English Language Classroom.

I think my favourite part of the session was when one of the speakers emphasised the need to cater to diverse learners in a forum where:

  • the attendance was compulsory – we had no say about whether we wanted to go for the forum or not,
  • the speakers were not all that diverse – their views and backgrounds all converged upon a central point, and
  • the topic was not something that seemed to engage the audience – it seemed to me that the audience really wanted to talk about policy issues, but that option does not seem to be offered anywhere in our ‘enrichment’.
